MB&F Marks 10th Anniversary of Legacy Machine

With LMX.

While MB&F was founded on avant-garde interpretations of the

case with Horological Machines, the brand also has an equally successful and more traditional line of watches with traditional round cases, the Legacy Machines (LM).

It’s hard to believe that the LM is already a decade old (MB&F itself is nearly 16 years old). To mark the 10th anniversary of the LM, MB&F has created the ultimate version of the LM1, the first watch in the series.

LMX stands for Legacy Machine X, with the last letter being the Roman numeral “10”. It combines various elements of watches from the past decade with some new ideas to create a familiar but completely new “machine”. As such, it has the familiar dual time zone sub-dials, but now they are tilted. Likewise, the LMX has a vertical power reserve indicator, but now with a spherical display for a more refined look. All of this is contained in a thinner case, similar to that first seen on the LM Thunderdome Triple Axis Tourbillon.

Compared to the original LM1, the LMX is indeed a substantial upgrade both inside and out, with sleeker styling, including a more three-dimensional dial, and a newly developed three-barrel movement with a power reserve of up to one week. By most standards, the LMX is a perfect evolution of the original LM's ideas and an impressive watch in its own right, but it does feel a little less bold for a milestone project.

Several details of the LMX stand out. Because the dual dials are tilted toward the wearer, more of the mechanism is revealed on the dial - a testament to MB&F's skill in creating dynamic mechanics with a clean style. Add in a few symmetrical and finely crafted steel bridges, and there's a lot to admire on the dial.

One of the most attractive elements of the dial is the domed power reserve display, which also doubles as a day of the week display. But it's too small, hard to read, and a bit cumbersome: showing the day of the week means that the watch must be wound on a specific date so that the indicator coordinates with the calendar.

However, the LMX is similar in size to the LM1, which means there's more complex mechanics packed into a similar space. This achievement is striking, and it’s further enhanced by the watch’s slimness. With a narrow case band—most of its height is the massive crystal—the LMX feels surprisingly thin.

Although functionally similar to the LM1, the LMX is indeed a decade ahead of the competition. It’s powered by a novel movement designed to showcase more of the mechanism on the dial while having a longer power reserve and maintaining case size.

First, the dial sides are designed to showcase their finishing, one of the focal points of the LM collection, which is inspired by classical 19th-century watchmaking.

Perhaps most striking are the steel bridges—all of which are meticulously finished. For example, the pair of steel bridges behind the double dials, despite their small size, have highly polished and rounded top surfaces, straight-grained sides, and are inlaid with bowl-shaped gold chatons.

The layout of the back is also special. Unlike the traditional pocket watch bridge design of the LM collection, the movement architecture is distinctly modern.

It has three barrels surrounding a central ratchet wheel, which houses a unique blue three-arm ratchet spring, giving it a power reserve of seven days, a big improvement over the LM1’s 45 hours.

The fact that this movement is so much more advanced than the LM1 while retaining its 44 mm diameter is a testament to its clever construction.
